Learning Curve

Businesses are funny things. The more you put into them the more you get out of them, but not at first. It’s like bringing up kids. Anyone who has had children or still has them can relate. Like children, businesses start off small and defenceless requiring a lot of your time, energy and care but after a while they begin to stand on their own two feet and can do some tasks without you as you implement systems (Rules). They go through a steep learning curve. Unfortunately some less experienced business owners are like teenagers or even young adults thinking that they already know everything there is to know about what they are doing and where they are going, failing to heed important information (perspective information from) from sources that have already made these mistakes and have learnt from experience what the best step forward might be.

Having owned and operated six small businesses in my time I can tell you from experience that doing everything yourself isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You are the accountant, the marketing & PR person, Sales, IT, Admin and tired wearer of any other hat that you might find needed in your office. Trying to do everything myself led to many problems that I inevitably needed to fix which resulted in taking up much needed time that could have, would have and should have, gone elsewhere.

No matter which business I was in inevitably I ended up with the same answer to the question: What was really our core business? The answer is 1st and foremost is generating and converting leads (Sales), the 2nd is looking after customers (Service).

Without these two very important focuses your business is doomed to fail. No matter how good you are at fixing, building, cleaning, designing or any myriad of other skills, if you own your own business, you need Sales & Service.

First Impressions.

I remember when I started my first business. It was 1996, I was in the service industry, and my business was called Café G Spot. 20 years of age and ready to take on the world, no one could tell me what to do or was going to slow me down. I was in for a rude shock.
All eager and excited I jumped straight into generating leads and talking with potential customers about catering contracts in the local area. Things were great, only problem was that people were asking for business cards and flyers and embarrassingly I was ill prepared. I needed to think of an excuse fast. “Would you believe that I just ran out. I’ve ordered some more and I’ll have them in about a week”. They inevitably replied “What’s your email address or website, I’ll look you up?” “Oh the website is in the process of being built and my email is gerardo@hotmail.com”. It’s funny right after that last statement I always seemed to get a knowing look like, sure it is! After that point no matter how much time I had invested in cultivating that lead I always came away looking unprofessional and that lesson sticks with me today.

I never think less of people for not having these things as I was once in the same position but if you have a New Business or existing Small Business make your first impression one that people remember for the right reasons. In this day and age of technology there’s no excuse for not having your Domain Name registered along with a professional email address.

Seeing a company with an email address that is linked to Hotmail or Yahoo (eg: qualitydining@yahoo.com) is like turning up at that nice restaurant to find staff in thongs and a singlet. I spent about 6 hours of my 14 hour day last Thursday just trying to complete a simple task of organising a mail out for our customers that should have taken half the time. Just trying to complete a simple task became a nightmare. Every time the phone rang or someone walked through the door it threw me off kilt. Not only that but the mail out ended up going over budget with the extra printing and postage costs. If I had thought outside the box I could have preserved my sanity, wasted less time and avoided the extra expense. Most importantly I will never get that lost time back. My partner is 5 months pregnant with twins and I would have loved that time to enjoy the important things in life: family, friends or doing something that I enjoy. ‘Working Smarter, Not Harder’ is my motto for this new year so I want to share a favourite quote and a great time and money saving tool with you.
